Fiery Furnace Blacksmith – 8Piece Thin Slot Punch & Drift Set – MADE IN AMERICA

These are my 8pc Drift and Slot Punch Sets for THIN Material Punches These slot punches are made from new 5160 spring steel and there are four sizes included in this set. 3/8-inch1/2-inch5/8-inch3/4-inch Each punch is made from 5/8-inch diameter steel and is about 9-inches long! These flat slot punches are used for punching a rectangular hole in stock that is 3/8-inch or thinner. Slot punches are most often used along with an opener and drift to make a round or square hole for mortise and tenon joinery, bottle openers, pass-through, and other common blacksmithing operations. To use these punches, place them on the stock where you wish to punch, hit once, remove the punch, inspect the mark you made, place the punch back on the mark, strike again. Repeat this process, removing the punch from the hole between EVERY hammer blow, until you have punched about 75% of the way through the stock. Flip the stock over and finish punching from that side. Removing the punch between every hammer blow allows you to inspect the hole you are making and make any adjustments to keep the hole straight and centered. It also keeps the punch from overheating and then deforming. You may also use an oil-based coolant to keep your punch from overheating. DO NOT use a water coolant. When used correctly, these punches will provide dependable, long-lasting service. Occasionally redressing the bevels will be necessary. I use these punches every day for punching holes in mild and high carbon alloy steels. Drifts There are four sizes of round drifts included in this set! 3/8-inch opener/drift (approximately 5-inches long)1/2-inch drift (approximately 6-inches long)5/8-inch drift (approximately 6-inches long)3/4-inch drift (approximately 6.5-inches long) All four are made from new, round, 1045 medium carbon steel, stock. The drifts can be cooled in water between drifting heats without harming them so long as the drift temperature is below 800 degrees. (Showing NO dull red color.) If you quench these at too high of a heat, they can harden and break. I decided to use 1045 as it is a bit tougher than low carbon mild steel, and will hold up better, but still allows you to water cool. If the drifts ever bend, you can simply bring them up to a low heat, straighten them with light hammer blows, and allow to air cool. (bending can sometimes occur in the smaller sizes, particularly 3/8-inch if you attempt attempt to force the drift through, allow the drift to overheat, or hit inaccurately.) The drifts are lightly sanded with 60-grit to provide a smooth drifting operation and feature a reverse taper on the struck end so they fall through the stock when you drive the drift. ________________________________________________________________ Check out the rest of my store! https://www.ebay.com/str/fieryfurnaceforge SHIPPING NOTE: I currently have a 5-business day handling time on this product.
