Aury Gates Coes & Co. Aury Gates Coes was born in 1817 and died in 1875. His company made wrenches starting in 1869 in Worcester, Mass. Aury was formerly part of L. & A. G. Coes which sold Monkey wrenches that his brother Lauring had invented in 1840. Previous wrenches had needed two hands to operate. The sons of A.G. continued the business after his death until changing the name to Coes Wrench Co. in 1881 or 1885 (sources differ). The original company mark on our 12″ Monkey Wrench is A.G.COES & Co. | WORCESTER | MASS with the name line curved. Weight is 4#. Made between 1869-1885.Our farm ownership has remained in our family through the 150 years since 1867. The monkey wrench has been part of that history for perhaps 148 of those years.
