Newer-Possibly Handmade Wood Plane Approx. 13 5/8″ L X 2 3/4″ T X 2 3/4″ W

Newer wooden body wood plane. One side of the plane appears to have a manufactures name, but I cannot make it out. The same is the case of the blade. The plane measures approximately 13 5/8 inches long and roughly 2 3/4 inches tall by 2 3/4 inches wide. There are two cracks on one side, one long crack and a smaller crack. The other side has a long crack as well. They look to me to be from the wood drying out. These should be visible in the photos. This plane appears to be fairly new. Either that or someone has tried to clean it up/sand it down. Please check out all of the pictures for condition before bidding/buying the plane. Forged Cast Steel Wood Handle Cabinet Turnscrew

We seek information about old tools that we find and impart whatever we learn so that a prospective buyer knows what is being purchased. Sometimes we can find little to offer, sometimes too much that has to be condensed into a Reader’s Digest version. Turnscrews like this have been made since the 19th Century with the purpose being, obviously, to make and repair cabinets. The essential characteristic is the straight, parallel sides of the Head; no wider over its width than the diameter of the head of the screw. The long handle allow deep access. The Handle permits application of force. The wide, flat area at the base of the Handle permits use of Pliers or Adjustable Wrench to use even greater turning force. The value of the design is obvious. There are finely-crafted Turnscrews being made today, but when a modern tool is no better than a century old tool it feels good to use the old one. It pleases me to use a half-century old Diagonal Clipper made in Utica NY to cut through a piece of chicken-wire fencing. This Tool, though, needs to be in the hands of someone who can use it properly. Or in the hands of someone who wants to define an era, a style, wants to treat it like the piece of working-hand art that it is. Or both! The Turnscrew is in fully functional condition. The Shaft is firmly affixed in the Handle. The Shaft is straight. The Blade shows some wear, but is still straight. There is might be a slight twist in the Blade. It is a sensation rather than a meaningful observation. The nicks and grooves in the Handle are worn smooth from use. There are nicks and dents in the Brass Ferule which only contribute to the character of the Tool. How old is it? The Maker’s Mark, wording in an oval, stamped into the wide part at the top of the Shaft is faint (see images). “CAST STEEL” is legible. “FORGED” underlines what might be “R.T. CO.”? Or, “C.T.Co.”? One online sources reads it as “C.H.CO.” and suggests “Cowles Hardware Company”. So . . . ? Our guess is early 20th Century at least, but we make no claim. We will ship the Turnscrew by USPS Priority Mail on the next regular business day flowing receipt of payment.

Has a maker mark that is not legible ending in F Mfg. Co. with a 4 stamped in. Head has faux wedge design. Clean with good edges with a small nick on each. 33″ long handle is original, sound & solid, well secured.
