Walden-Worcester 4050 3/8 inch Ratchet

Walden Manufacturing Company began business in 1906 and for fifteen years it was a primary manufacturer of tools for the automobile industry. The company’s name was changed to Walden-Worcester in 1914 and by 1926 needed to merge with Stevens Co. to become Stevens Walden-Worcester, Inc. though the company was an early innovator and produced quality products it was not enough to allow the company to survive and they ultimately ceased business in the 1990s. Being slow to move from pressed steel to drop forging was a part of Walden’s problems, but it appears that the company made high quality tools. Knowing little else about the company we find their tools to be a bit quirky in execution. The images provided on Alloy Artifacts (http://alloy-artifacts.org/walden-worcester.html) show ratchets and sockets with odd shapes — appearance is wholly subjective. In the early days of automobile tool making, Walden was a pioneer with both Ratchets and sockets made of pressed steel, including being one of the first companies, in 1925, to use chrome-nickel alloy steel for its sockets. In the 1940 they may have been the first company to use a cold-forming process to produce their sockets. This is now the most common process. Yet, for all this information, determining when this 4050 Ratchet was made has proven to be difficult. Our best guess is 1950s. The 4050 feels substantial — like it’ll last. And it has for a half century. It functions as originally designed. There is evidence of use but not of abuse. With no effort it can be made into a daily user tool. With a little attention it can be made to stand-out. We will ship the Wrench by USPS 1st Class Mail on the next regular business day following receipt of payment.

Vintage Chapin & Stevens C.S. Co. 28″ Wood & Brass Level Pine Meadows Conn. USA

SGS- Antique Tools… where we try and group our listings of Antique and Dated Vintage Tools. Vintage Chapin & Stevens C.S. Co. 28″ Wood & Brass LevelPine Meadows Connecticut USAThe following are my observations and comments, but please reference the pictures and ask questions to make your own assessment. This wood level has seen some use and suffered some bumps and bruses over the years, but both vials appear to be functional, and it is in decent shape considering its age. The steel screws holding the top plates are a mix of flat and oval head, and different sizes. I am including 8- #4 x 1/2″ solid brass slotted oval head screws to match the 2 existing steel oval head screws, 6- #4 x 3/8″ solid brass slotted flat head screws to replace the steel screws holding the side plates (not sure what length the existing ones are), and 4- #12 x 1″ solid brass slotted flat head screws to replace the original #12 x 3/4″ steel screws attaching the solid brass end caps. While I figure these screws are a match size (not length) wise, I assume that there will be some fussing around with drilling, filling, and possible countersinking if one is set on restoration and replacing the existing screws. Also, note that there is a small steel brad (without the head) on the bottom near one of the ends. Stevens Spintite Nut Driver 341x 11/32 & 3406 3/16 pre-1926

The Stevens Company began making Stevens Spintite nut drivers in the early teens of the 20th century. In 1926 the company was purchased by Walden and there after the devices were labeled as “Waldeen-Stevens” or “Walden Worchester”. Definitive information about the tools is difficult to find, but the following information from the Model T Ford Club of America forum seems as complete as any available. 1. “they changed to a dual number system sometime in the mid 20s era that used fractional numbers and also a part number. The dual number system with only the Stevens name on it was used till early 1926 when Walden bought out Stevens and added there (sic) name.” 2. “The two ring handles are used with the early # style system tools. The “no ring” handles are used with the dual number system tools.” 3. “The “no knurling” style is used with the early # style of tools. The “knurling” style of ferial (sic) is used with the dual number style of tools.” 4. “The tools with the dual number system with both Stevens and Walden on them are correct for 26 and 27 Model T era as well as all the Model A and till sometime into the V8 era, as long as they have a black handle. Sometime before WW2 the handles changed to a natural finish. The tools were still the same just with a natural finish handle.” (https://www.mtfca.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=243) The last numeral of the part number “341x” is probably a “1” which would logically identify the size as “11/32”. The “3406” identifies the other socket size as 6/32 (or 3/16). Just sayin’. The Drivers are in quite good condition, though the 3406 has a hole drilled through its handle and the ferrule is noticeably corroded (see images). At close to a hundred years old the Drivers could handle regular use or being a part of a show-and-tell or both. We will ship the Spintites by USPS First Class Mail on the next regular business day following receipt of payment.
