Block &Tackle (BLOCK ONLY) 8″ Wood/Brass US Navy Merriman Bros 1949

Vintage Block & Tackle – Block only – Small Size 8” Vintage block (without tackle/sheave), Merriman Bros, Made in USA, *1949.This listing contains: One block measuring approximately 8.5” x 6.75” x 4” – weight: 5.3lbs (the last five photos of the crate and tags are for reference only). This block is wood with brass inside ends (not really sure the exact name to call the brass pieces). This block is stamped: RIG NO 11, MAX ROPE 3 IN CIR, SIZE 8 IN. The brass on BOTH ends have greenish areas of corrosion/patina. The bottom and top of the block has small cracks where the pins are holding the brass inside the block. The block you receive WILL NOT BE THE ONE IN THE PHOTOS. We have many of these, they all look almost exactly the same, the wear on each may differ slightly, some of the stamps are easier to read some are not. If you would like specific photos before you buy please send us a message. General Information: These are small, single sheave blocks WITHOUT THE SHEAVE. Some are all wood, some have brass inside on the ends (see photos). Some of the blocks containing brass has greenish areas of corrosion/patina that will need to be cleaned/restored by the buyer, please see photos for specific details on each listing. Because these are so heavy, a medium flat rate box is usually the most economical way to ship them, but we will offer ground shipping as well. These are post WWII and originally were painted Navy grey. Sometime in the 1970’s, our dad stripped all of these with the intention of making lamp bases out of them. We believe they may be made of oak. We have many that are in various conditions, we will list each separately so be sure to look at each listing for specific details. All blocks are AS-IS, all have dust, scratches and dings, some scuffing and ground in who knows what. There were HUNDREDS of these, they were all stacked and restacked a number of times so they are not in new/pristine condition. They are old, vintage, and show wear from storage. We have a photo of one of the shipping tags (see photos in the end of the listing) from the bulk of the Block & Tackle we had that says: From US Naval Shipyard, B L: Portsmouth, NH. This label is NOT included with this item, it is just listed for reference. MOST of these are marked: RIG NO 11, MAX ROPE 3 IN CIR, SIZE 8 IN but some of the stamps are shallow or faded. The last five photos are not included in this listing and are for reference only.*This was purchased in the early 1970s at a Department of Defense auction at Naval Air Station Alameda by my father. The last 6 photos are of an unopened crate of these for reference / provenance only. Made by Merriman Bros, Boston, Mass, USA and shipped to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, USA. *I’m not sure of the exact date, but some of the block and tackle we had (there were over 400) had tags (similar to the one in the last photo) with a date of 1949, I’m not sure if these are from 1949, but I do know they were made before 1955 (No Federal Stock Number stamped on the crate, only hand written on the side).
