Simmons Hardware Company. Fast shipping same day as payment is rec’d The plane was recently obtained from a sale, shows well cared for, exact age is unknown. The plane has been completely dismantled, and all parts cleaned. The wood is solid and has been completely sanded and refinished close to the original finish color. The finished metal parts were stripped, cleaned, and repainted black. I believe this is a early wood plane, sold thru the E.C. Simmons Hardware Company out of St. Louis, I believe the plane was the transitional series made by Ohio Tool Company in the 1910’s, for the E.C. Simmons Hardware Company under the KEEN KUTTER SERIES. This plane is the E.C. Simmons KK23 model, smooth bottom, as seen from the 1912 E. C. Simmons trade catalog. The plane is embossed on the front base K5 1/2. The lever cap, and the lateral adjusting lever have no ID markings. The side base and the iron is stamped with the E C. Simmons Hardware Company wedge logo trade mark, with ST. LOUIS USA (the earlier logo from Ohio tool co.). The plane is 9” long, and 2 3/8” wide, the blade is 1 3/4” wide and 7 1/16” long. The plane has the 1” diameter brass adjustment knob. The plane is in good condition for the era,…..way back when someone brazed welded a very small crack in the side underneath—appears very good and tight—-see marked pic for location,…….…., The plane has been completely dismantled, and all parts cleaned. The wood is solid and has been completely sanded and refinished close to the original finish color…….. The finished metal parts were stripped, cleaned, and repainted black…….As with the vintage of the plane there are a few dings, a few surface scratches, some minor pitting spots and some discoloration, all noted from the photos. Co. No 5G ,Union Co listed corrugated bottom as letter G rather than the normal letter C, wood plane that was recently obtained from an estate sale, were it was apart of a private wood plane collection. This is a Union Mfg. Company wood plane No 5G base, not sure of era. The base is 2 3/8” wide, and 14” long, and embossed No 05 A little history of Union from various resources: The Union Manufacturing Company was formed in 1866 and was in operations to 1919. Some of their original stock holders included officers of the Stanley Rule and Level Company. Union Mfg. was in the plane business until 1919 when in 1920 Stanley Rule & Level Tool Company bought out the wood plane division. Stanley sold the Union Brand line for a number of years, possibly through the 1930’s with most having Stanley irons in the planes. The base is in good condition for the era, no cracks or welds…… the base had the japanning flaking off….. and was stripped, primed and re-painted with semi-gloss Krylon black paint…. as with the vintage of the part, there are a few dings, a few surface scratches, some discoloration, all as noted from the photos.
