The first Playboy Club opened in Chicago on February 29, 1960, and was known as the Playboy Key Club. The club was modeled after the Gaslight Club, another Chicago establishment that required members to carry a key for entry. The history of Playboy Club keys includes: Rabbit-headed keys The original keys to the Playboy Club were rabbit-headed metal keys that members presented to the Door Bunny to gain entry. Key-card replacement In 1966, the metal keys were replaced by metal key-cards. Special keys Some keys had special meanings: C1: Only eight people had C1 keys, and the C1 on the back of the key meant that the holder could date a Playboy Bunny. Hugh Hefner's key was a C1t.
