A taper tap is best for starting, chasing and threading a new hole. If your budget allows for only one tap, I recommend a plug tap. A plug tap will let you start, chase and thread a new hole and also allow threading and chasing a blind hole to within 1/4″ of the bottom. A bottom tap allows threading and chasing threads very close to the bottom of blind holes. Chasing is the process of rethreading damaged, rusty or painted threads. High Speed Steel (HSS) is a broad description of steel grade. A chair made of wood is also a broad description. Is the chair made of soft wood like pine or something hard like hickory?
