In good shape with no damage. 4-1/2″ long. It seems like there is a small wire along the length inside where the blade goes. Almost like the blade would have a slight groove to it. It does look like it came that way from the factory. Ask any questions

parts or restore as-is incomplete Tower & Lyon Chaplin’s Patent wood block plane
You are bidding on one incomplete Tower & Lyon Chaplin’s patent wood block plane as pictured. It has some condition issues, so please keep reading. It is marked on the iron with “O R CHAPLIN’S PATS TOWER & LYON NEW YORK MAY 7 ’72 JULY …….”. The last part of that date isn’t legible, but that date is July 4, 1876. The first patent turns out to be patent 126,519, awarded to Orril R Chaplin of Boston, Massachusetts, for his improvements in carpenter’s planes. The second patent turns out to be patent 179,494, awarded to John J Tower of New York City for his improvements to the tote and knob on bench planes, and seemingly not really relevant to this plane. But it is good advertising.Overall length of the body is about 6-7/16″. The iron is about 1-9/16″ in width at the lower edge, and is about 4-3/4″ in length. The plane features the corrugations on the top side of the body, the smooth sole, the adjusting lever under the frog or blade support, and the throat is not adjustable on this plane. The cap is missing from the plane. There is a hole in each side of the plane, near the top of each arched side, and I don’t believe that those holes are original. I’m guessing that the throat has been opened up on the forward edge under the cross rib, and the corners aren’t square as can be seen.Condition would otherwise be good. The sole has a variety of scratches and several small casting flaws. The japanning on the top side is worn in places, and there is some rust showing through the japanning around the front knob. The front knob unthreads easily, and has some rust showing through the nickeling. The blade support and lever are in good condition. The iron has some patina (color) and lots of lengthwise scratches, and was probably sanded to clean it up.EXCEPT as noted, there are no cracks or chips or chunks missing from any of the castings, and everything operates properly. SHIPPING: Over 1 pound, shipped USPS Ground Advantage in a padded envelope, insurance is included. No International shipping. l sell what I enjoy, and I collect antique woodworking tools and I enjoy photography! The queue is overflowing with tools right now, as they seem to be finding me faster than I can list them. So please keep watching my postings as I have LOTS more to list!Searching my listings: I have lots to see! Some of you will undoubtedly enjoy browsing through everything, but if you want to hone in on something specific, I suggest you click on the “Visit Store” link in Seller Information section in the upper right of this listing. That will lead you to my extensive system of categories. How to subscribe to my eBay newsletter? Every Friday eBay sends out my newsletter featuring 10 of my most interesting new listings. To subscribe, click the VISIT STORE to go to my eBay store and then click on the heart symbol that is labeled SAVE SELLER. That will automatically get you on the mailing list for the newsletters. They are free, and you can unsubscribe at any time. ETHICS IN DESCRIPTIONS: I also buy for my collecting on eBay, and I have been burned too many times by misleading (duh did I forget to mention …….) descriptions, and auctions with pictures only of the left side because the right side was trashed. Life is much simpler for me if I disclose what I know or see about an item before you bid, and especially before you receive it in the mail. I come from the handshake school of doing business, and hopefully you are like me and understand what that means. What goes around, comes around.RETURN POLICY: I believe that if you give honest descriptions, and include enough pictures, you shouldn’t need a return policy. However, that doesn’t mean that I won’t make an occasional mistake. Please bid with the assurance that if I have made an error in my listing, I WILL take care of you. And if you have made an error, and bought the wrong size, for example, I will still take care of you (but I’ll let you pay the return shipping!).USPS POSTAGE RATE INCREASES: I use the Post Office for everything, and yes, the shipping charges just keep going up and up. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it’s not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20″ long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30″ long, because those longer packages won’t fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights. I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item. If the value is $250 or over, eBay requires your signature at delivery for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.SALES TAX: Interstate sales tax is now the reality on all the major selling websites including eBay. If I ship to a state where eBay is required to collect sales tax, eBay will charge you the sales tax for your location. There is lots of information available from eBay that explains it in much more detail. The sales tax is completely out of my hands — I don’t have anything to do with deciding whether to charge tax, I don’t have anything to do with deciding the tax rate, and I never see any of the funds that are collected, they go directly to eBay.SELLING OUTSIDE OF EBAY: Why would I risk my lengthy good standing with eBay to save you a couple of dollars? Especially when you ask on an email that is sent through the eBay email system? Please don’t ask, the answer is no.INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: I no longer ship Internationally other than Canada. If you are in Canada, ask for what the shipping would cost, but be prepared for it to be $$$$$. AUCTIONS: I won’t end an auction listing early to sell it to you directly. As a bidder, I really dislike going back at the end of an auction to bid, only to discover that the seller had ended the auction early. So I won’t do that for you, or to you.PACKAGING: Please check my feedback — I package well. I figure if you take the time to purchase from me, then I can take the time to package it well, and not just throw it into a cereal box with a scrap of newspaper.I hope someday I will meet some of you as we trudge the happy road of tool collecting!
