Antique WARDS MASTER QUALITY DOUBLE BIT 11" Swamper Axe 4Lb. 2oz Bit/Forge Welded 4 3/4" Bits"WARDS MASTER QUALITY" was a brand used by Montgomery Ward & Co., a major mail order company that was headquartered in Chicago. Although they were in business from 1872 through 1997 the brand "Wards Master Quality" was probably only used between the 1920s and the early very early 1940s. Apparently it was discontinued because of the cut-backs that arose from WWII. It is not clear if it was re-introduced after WWII.Montgomery Ward did not manufacture goods themselves but like many companies they had things (like axes) manufactured for them with their own brand on them. All things considered, there is a strong probability that the proprietary branded Wards axes were made by the Mann Edge Tool Co. The axes so marked were of a good quality and were sold throughout the country via mail order. The company also sold goods through their retail stores that were originally located in major cities within what is considered the Midwest. WARDS MASTER QUALITY was only one of the proprietary brands associated with Wards and it was used on both single bit and double bit axes.
