An original cutting iron for a Stanley No. 103 lever adjust smoothing plane by STANLEY. This cutter is marked with the Sweetheart trademark introduced in the 1920's. The blade measures 1 3/8" in width. Stanley expanded the width of the No. 103 and its non-adjustable equivalent, the No. 102, from 1 1/4 inches to 1 3/8 inches in 1914. Consequently, it was necessary for Stanley to produce both sizes for many years. Some later No. 102 and 103 cutting irons marked with the Notched Rectangle trademark, introduced in the 1930's, are found from time to time ni the earlier, 1 1/4" inch width.
