An ORIGINAL CUTTING IRON for a Sargent No. 422 jointer plane, No. 410 heavy smoothing plane or No. 418 fore plane by Sargent & Company, New Haven, Connecticut. This 2 3/8" width cutter is marked with Sargent's "V.B.M." trademark, standing for "Very Best Made". This "Type 4" version of Sargent's cutting irons is distinguished by having the nnumber of the plane for which it is intended imprinted on the top of the iron as part of the logo, in this case.
